We believe that all youth in Los Angeles should have the opportunity to discover their potential and pursue their passions.
In 2007, a conversation over dinner sparked an idea that has evolved into a decade long commitment to quality tutoring and mentorship for students living in Los Angeles. While dining at a local restaurant, Alex Choi, the founder of RenewLA, struck up a conversation with an elderly couple who coincidentally were both retired social workers. When asked to identify the greatest needs of Los Angeles, they immediately responded with education and homelessness.
With this in mind, Alex and a small group of working professionals and emerging artists started a supplementary education program with an emphasis on using their professional skill sets to serve the youth in Los Angeles. Over the years, RenewLA has partnered with schools and local community members from Boyle Heights, Lincoln Heights, Koreatown, and Pico-Union to create sustainable, quality programs.
Mission + Approach
RenewLA seeks to renew the city of Los Angeles culturally and socially by providing educational mentoring services in various professional fields to underserved youth in the greater Los Angeles area.
Our vision is to mobilize university students, working professionals, and emerging artists to connect them to help solve and create awareness of our city’s greatest social issues.
